Wisconsin-Grown Ginseng: A Tradition of Excellence
Wisconsin-grown ginseng is among the most sought-after in the world, second only to wild ginseng, and is renowned for its exceptional quality. This reputation stems from strict EPA regulations in the U.S., which limit chemical use to safeguard public health, protect the environment, and promote long-term agricultural sustainability. Unlike countries with looser regulations, Wisconsin ginseng is cultivated under rigorous conditions, thriving in the nutrient-rich, adequately drained black soil of Central Wisconsin. This unique soil composition allows the roots to absorb abundant nutrients, resulting in ginseng with unmatched quality, aroma, and potency.
However, these meticulous farming practices come with challenges. Wisconsin ginseng grows more slowly than ginseng cultivated in other regions, and many plants fail to survive due to minimal chemical intervention. This leads to significantly lower yields compared to countries like Canada and China, where sandy, well-drained soil and less restrictive chemical use enable higher productivity. For example, in Ontario, Canada, an acre can yield over 4,000 pounds of dried ginseng roots, whereas Wisconsin growers average only 1,500 pounds per acre.
American ginseng has deep roots in Wisconsin’s history. In 1904, Wisconsin farmers successfully transplanted ginseng from the wild into fields and began cultivating it commercially. By the late 1970s, Ontario entered the market, leveraging its well-drained sandy soil and sprinkler irrigation to accelerate growth, overtaking Wisconsin as the leading producer by the 1990s. In the mid-1980s, China imported ginseng seeds from Wisconsin to launch its own industry. By the 2010s, China had surpassed Canada to become the world’s largest producer of American ginseng. Today, China and Canada account for over 95% of global production, making authentic Wisconsin-grown ginseng exceptionally rare and highly prized—despite the misleading prevalence of the “Product of Wisconsin” label on lower-quality products.
At its peak in 1991, Wisconsin boasted 1,360 ginseng growers. However, the labor-intensive nature of ginseng farming and declining profitability have forced many to leave the industry. Now, fewer than 30 growers remain, with over 90% of their harvest exported to Asia, where it is sold in high-end ginseng shops.
