Why Is Wisconsin-Grown Ginseng Sought After?

Wisconsin-grown ginseng is highly prized due to strict EPA regulations that limit chemical use, protecting public health, the environment, and agricultural sustainability. Combined with Central Wisconsin’s nutrient-rich, adequately drained black soil, these practices produce superior-quality ginseng. However, the plants grow more slowly, and many don’t survive, leading to much lower yields—about 1,500 pounds per acre compared to over 4,000 pounds in Ontario, Canada.

While American ginseng originated in Wisconsin, Ontario overtook it as the leading producer in the 1990s, and China surpassed Canada in the 2010s to become the world’s largest producer. Today, China and Canada supply over 95% of the global market, making authentic Wisconsin ginseng exceptionally rare and highly valued.

In 1991, Wisconsin had 1,360 ginseng growers. Now, fewer than 30 remain, with over 90% of their harvest exported to Asia.
